... has got it exactly right. The problem comes from the use of common names like 'daddy long legs'. Different critters get called that in different countries, or even different parts of the same country.

The long-legged fly you are referring to is usually called a daddy long legs in Europe. They are any of a number of species of fly in the Family Tipulidae. Also known as craneflies, they are completely harmless, do not have venom at all, and often do not even feed as adults. Their larvae look sort of like leathery pickles, and are found in swamps, streams and moist soil.

The most common creature usually called a daddy long legs is the opilionid arachnid, also known as a harvestman. These guys are somewhat related to spiders, with great long spindly legs, but they have only one body section (not two as in spiders). They do not possess venom at all. They are predators on aphids and other small critters, and will sometimes also suck a few plant juices. I seriously doubt that they could break the skin if they were to bite a human, and do not possess any venom. Harvestmen are rather rare in California, which is one reason that the whole daddy long legs myth keeps popping up. For example, the Mythbusters episode dealing with the 'venomous daddy long legs' issue didn't look at harvestmen, because that's not the critter called a daddy long legs in San Franciso (where the show is filmed).

The cellar spiders (Pholcidae) are also sometimes called daddy long legs. These spiders do have venom glands, and are among the most common household spiders in the United States. They live almost exclusively in association with humans, in cellars, attics and secluded parts of buildings, and are rarely found in any other habitat. Although they do indeed possess venom, the venom they have is formulated to work on invertebrates, and is not very toxic to humans at all, even if they were inclined to bite humans (which they aren't).

Right then, this question depends entirely on where you live.
To some the daddy longlegs is what is also commonly known as a crane-fly. It is a long legged flying insect and NO it does not have poisonous venom.
To others, esp Africans and I think Americans and Canadians, is also known as the Long legged Cellar Spider. These are those spindly legged, tiny bodied spidery things that live in cobwebs under sinks, behind cupboards etc. These do indeed have a very powerful venom, but their mouth parts are not strong enough to break human skin.
However, they do hunt other spiders. So if you don't like spiders then keep these critters around and they will help to control your problem.
Hope that answers the question.

daddy long legs refers to actually three creatures and is why it is commonly confused...

Harvestmen (Phalangids or Opiliones )are also known by the name "daddy longlegs" or "granddaddy longlegs" , but this name can also refer to two other unrelated arthropods: the crane fly (Tipulidae) and the cellar spider (Pholcidae).

i always refered to it as the cellar spider i think...

anyways the type that you are thinking of is the CRANE FLY, which does not contain venom nor bite people.

take a look at the links below and you'll see each of the three types, the first is the one that you are reffering to.

There are men who love tall and narrow, others short and complete bodied. there is not any eye-catching each and absolutely everyone, nor do you're able to attempt! Be your self. in case you imagine your legs are too narrow, the position pants so that they provide the effect of being fuller. With a correct, use a belt to emphasise your structure. TO be shorter, and extra "strong" positioned on residences. My female friend is 5' 10" and that i respect her dearly. yet i'm in love such as her personality maximum. The body is secondary. My very last female friend became 5'3 and became impressive. i does no longer problem about your correct, merely be your self! that's what men like the most is a lady gentle with herself!

Yes the venom is very poisonness. They can not bite us though. They are spiders with eight very long legs that are very thin. Flies have six short legs.
Daddy long legs are great, they eat mosquitos.

You might be thinking of European Crane Flies. They have great big long legs like a daddy long legs spider but they have wings and look like a mosquito on steroids. Don't think that they are dangerous.

Daddy long legs are the most venemous and deadly spiders on the planet. However, their fangs are too small and delicate to pierce human flesh, so you dont need to worry about being bitten ^_^

The Daddy Long legs is indeed a Spider, and it is indeed venomous. It cannot bit humans, but they love to eat other bugs. Don't kill them when you find them in your garden.
