I want to avoid any harsh chemicals. White clothing/bed sheets always get a yellowish tint after washing it over months.

Yellowing of white clothing can occur if chlorine bleach is used on a material with a resin finish. To whiten resin-finished clothes, use color remover which may be found in grocery and drug stores. Follow the directions on the package. This should not be done in a washing machine. Instead use a container that can be heated. Rinse thoroughly after use of color remover, and wash the container well.

Nylon which has yellowed may be brightened by soaking in a solution of 1/8 cup chlorine bleach, 1 tsp. of vinegar and 1 gallon of warm, not hot, water. One other possibility is to dissolve 1/4 cup of dishwasher detergent in hot water. Then add the solution to 1 gallon of cool water in a non-metallic container. Soak yellowed clothing for at least 1/2 hour, and then rinse well.

Use an alternative bleach product or an "oxy" product. They're still chemicals, but less harsh on your fabrics than chlorine bleach and they're safe for brightening your color loads, too.

You can also add a little bluing to your white loads... the very slight bluish tint gives the illusion that they're a more brilliant white.

Try OxyClean or one of the other "oxy" products.

They work without bleach.
