Because Superman's dad had that same logo on Krypton, and the rest of the people had emblems on their chests, too.

It's pretty obvious the S could stand for Superman, but I think there's a whole different meaning, and some of you are on the ball.

"S" is his family crest. Although I can't remember exactly what his last name was originally. The original Superman movie explains it all pretty well. Right before they shoot his butt off into space they put the family crest in the pod and when he gets older he uses that to make his costume after his adopted family tells him the truth.

The symbol burned into Clark's chest is the kryptonian symbol for air; it is also the kryptonian letter "S", which looks very similar to Superman's chest shield, activates every so often so that he can voluntarily remove the red kryptonite ring that he was wearing.

The 'S' emblem is taken from some Native American tribe medical symbol. I think that's what the book I had a while ago said...

umm...maybe he thought fititng the whole 'Superman' as a bit stuffy..
So he decided to fit in the S all by itself!
