Actually, the lives of these organisms are longer. But for the most of their lives they are in a stage of larva (a kind of a child in a fly world). They just eat and grow. And when they are mature enough to reproduce, they turn into flies. After laying eggs there's not much for them left to do. So they die. What an exciting existence, ei?

The primary function of the adult is reproduction; the mouthparts are vestigial, and the digestive system is filled with air. The wings are membranous (similar to a house fly's wings but with many more veins). The forewings are much larger than the hind wings. The males' eyes are usually large, and the front legs long, used to grasp females and often held in front when resting. In some species, all legs aside from the males' front legs are useless. The majority of the life of the adult is spent in mating swarms.

Funny enough it gives them a great chance of survival.

Because they hatch enmasse the predators that feed on them cannot possible eat all the may flies and so they manage to mate and start the next generation.

Flys evolved that way. For everything on Earth there is "a time to live and a time to die" - I'm sure. I'm not sure that what I said is an exact quote. But, it is my quote!

They only live for a day, just enough time to lay their eggs in water. Mayflies are often used by Anglers as bait for trout
