Kansas is in the wrong area of the country. It is the area where cold air from Canada and warm air from the Gulf of Mexico generally collide. Okalahoma and Northern Texas have more tornados than most other states. I think Kansas is a close second. Florida has a lot of tornados too but most of them come from hurricanes.

Tornados hit a lot of places. Statistically I think you'll find that Kansas doesn't have its fair share.
Having lived in Kansas all my life (45+ years), I've been in several tornado warnings but never victim to a tornado striking where I was at. I've travelled to where tornados have struck and helped clean up.
They are a very terrifying force of nature. Kansans as a whole respect nature. Tornados for all their terrifying stories are becoming more and more predictable. With the various kinds of radar and other weather tools, they can be spotted easier. Only fools do not heed tornado warnings.
F5 tornados are very rare in Kansas. More than likely they tend to be only a block or a few blocks wide. They love to travel in the path of least resistance, with rivers, creeks, and ravines as a good path. Tree lines are minor nuisances to them.
I helped clean up a tornado strike near Hutchinson, KS. A farmer 15 miles away brought back some tools to the house I was helping out. One wall of the house had been moved a foot from the foundation and then pushed 6 inches back in place. It was amazing to see that wall just standing there with a 6-inch gap from the house and all the window curtains weaved in between the wood slats. You could stand on debris and see the path of the tornado for a good 1/2 mile in either direction.
Fear them. But respect them.

It's located in the well known "Tornado Alley". Lots of areas just right for tornado formations. Its so flat and that helps too.
