i rekon they can, some people are born with amazing voices anyway-but the voice box can be trained to do anything, change accents, mimic characters, so why couldnt it be trained to sing- some people who are tone def just need to be to be taught what a tune is, then they can develop their voice with those exercises, same way you can teach yourself to act, i mean if brad pitt can act then i think anyone can!

You don't have to be tone deaf to be unable to carry a tune. Certainly, if you are tone deaf you can't, but there are other factors as well. Some people can hear tones OK and recognise songs and like music, but there is something about them that won't let them be in tune - they just can't get the accuracy, as their brains don't really register what is what correctly. So if they are listening to a good singer, the notes sound fine to them, why wouldn't they, but when they themselves sing, if they are flat or sharp, it is all the same to them. To them, it sounds the same if they are just "in the area" as it sounds if they are right on it.

Calvin Coolidge was tone deaf, totally. He said he knew two songs, one was the Star Spangled Banner and the other one wasn't.

Then there was Florence Foster Jenkins, the kind of person I am talking about. She loved music, was a socialite in New York, and was rich. She loved music and song, and thought she could sing. She insisted on giving recitals, hiring accompanist and hiring halls. People showed up to hear her for the sheer amazement over how very bad she was.

Some people are naturally tone deaf, which would make it difficult, if not impossible, for them to learn to sing in tune. Nothing against those people, its just a natural genetic factor that doesnt allow for them to distinguish different tones.

NO. My brother is tone deaf, and nothing or no one will ever manage to teach him to sing in tune.
If he made a pop record it would probably be a huge hit wholly on the grounds that it would be so BAD!

I doubt it, some people are just tone deaf. A good way to self-check if you're in tune or not is to plug one ear when singing.

I have heard that a good teacher could teach virtualy anyone to sing well but I think that they would have a lot of trouble with me.

It dosen't stop me trying to sing so I just turn the music up so loud I can't hear myself :o)

I don't know. My brother tried to teach his one friend. However, the kid still couldn't carry a tune in a bucket if his life depended on it.

Yes they can. It just takes practice. Try joining a local choir, be it church or whatever.

I don't think everybody could. It's something you learn but it's also partly genetic and how your brain functions.
