no one can say WHY a person dies. It was just her time to go. Maybe it was something genetic? but-hey, its better then dying in an awful way.

According to scientists the reason why some people stop breathing fatally in their sleep, is because a cumulative loss of cells in the area of the brain that controls breathing triggers a condition called central sleep apnoea.
Sleep apnoea is a condition which usually jolts people awake. The team at UCLA believe that central sleep apnoea may present a risk in particular to elderly people, whose heart and lungs are already weaker due to age.
They also have suspicions that the condition strikes people suffering the late stages of neurodegenerative disorders, such as Parkinson's disease.
Such people often have breathing difficulties during sleep, and the researchers believe their bodies eventually reach a point where they are unable to rouse themselves from sleep when they stop breathing.
This is a NEW THEORY as to why some people die in their sleep. It was published in a health magazine on August 9, 2005. I hope this helps and i am totally sorry for your loss......take care.

I'd rather have my grandmother die in her sleep than any other way... I'm glad yours didn't experience any pain. It happens because it get old. Batterie run out of power just like a body loses it's life. Her soul is still alive, but doesn't have to handle the pressures of being human, and she can be much happier. I'm so scared about the day I'll have to deal with my grandmother's death, but death is a part of life.. Bless you, and I wish you well...

That's the most natural way of all, I'd think.
Even if the deaths would be perfectly distributed throughout 24 hours, still many would die while sleeping - just because this "activity" goes for hours every day.

Usually between the hours of 1:00 am and 4:00 am you are in your deepest sleep and that is when your respiration and heart beat are at it's lowest. Quite often it is not enough to keep an old person going and they die in their sleep.

its not the sleep that makes them die, its their time and maybe just the fact they are already relaxed helps them along.....be grateful that when your grandmothers time did come (as it will for each and every one of us) that it was peaceful and serene...so many who die suffer mentally and physically so a quiet lapse into an eternal sleep is the very best way to go and remember death is only part of the journey not the end.

she died with no pain and maybe happy and dreaming of the best. it's luck here. but you will not die so. you'll live your life. and stop imagining things that will not happend. Dream, live, love you and others ... and listen some good music. It helpes.
I had a phobia about the meteorite that comes over my city at night. It never happened anything was just time used in not a proper way.

I would think it has something to do with the fact that we spend 1/3 of our lives sleeping and so therefor some of us are bound to be asleep when we die. Also, when we're dying we are more tired and so spend even more time sleeping?

There are lots of reasons.. one is a problem called sleep apnea. This occurs more often in obese people. But basically you stop breathing, if something doesn´t trigger the breath reflex, you can be in trouble.
It is possible your grandmother had a stroke, or a heart attack, or simply just died of old age. Our bodies get tired and they need to rest.

People die in their sleep because of some kind of a horrifying dream. For example: someone dreams of them falling off the twin towers once they land...there is a possibility they will actually die.

I don't believe that going like that is something to fear. It was probably her time to go and though it might not have seemed so at the time, to go in one's sleep is a blessing... to just slip away... to no longer suffer or be in pain. My gramma died in her sleep too and I dreamed of her the next night. She was walking without a cane and she waved to me and smiled. I like to think that where she was going there was no pain.
