Optical illusions are just that. The visual acuity of the viewer is skewed by the facts before them. The simplest optical illusion is to take a photo of a person who is standing about 50 feet away and of a hand only a few feet away. Positioning the hand in such a way as to APPEAR as if the person is standing on the hand. It is an illusion created by the placement of items and using the two dimensional effects of the photo.

Subliminal messages are much different. Though in the 70's, many agencies claimed that advertisements were hiding subliminal drawings and text, much of it has been disproved over time. The most recognized attempts at subliminal advertising were in a movie, while during a scene of a desert a 2 frame shot of a cold bottle of a Soft Drink was spliced into the film. The eye didn't catch the frame at all, but the mind did, processing in the cold coke and making the viewer thirsty. The idea was to sell more drinks in this fashion.

One of the most well known NON-so-subliminal attempts at control was by the maker of NyQuil. In the commercial, the voiceover stated that they would help you remember by stating the name of the product three times. The voice only stated the name twice thus forcing the mind to complete - and remember - the third time. The advertisers bureau successfully lobbied for the commercials removal from TV.
