Well your iPod came with the software that has iTunes as well as configures your iPod. So run that while your iPod is connected to your computer. Everytime you connect your iPod to the computer it is automatically detected and should open iTunes. To get music on to your iPod, any songs that are in the Library file in iTunes, will be uploaed onto your iPod. To get songs into the Library, you go to File>Add File/Folder to Library.

To manually update your iPod, open iTunes, and see if your iPod is detected on the left panel. If it is, right click and choose Update. It will update your iPod with the songs in Library.
