It seems to happen either completely randomly - like I'll say "hi'" - just a simple greeting and he's already pissed. Or he'll overreact to something so small that you could just answer nicely. And yet at other times he is the perfect picture of friendliness and happiness. What does this suggest? Aaahhh! Please help me - I'm so confused! Thanks!

This person is NOT bipolar. That's just the affliction of the month that people tend to pick. It is possible that he has Post traumatic stress disorder, if I had to hazard a guess. That would explain the overreaction to simple things and sudden anger as well. But I'm not a psychiatrist.
He sounds to me like he has something, but it doesn't matter what he "has." What matters is how it makes you feel. Obviously, it doesn't make you feel good. So keep away from him. The nasty bits he does we call abuse. The nice parts are the set up for the next round of abuse. The way off his rollercoaster is to stop it and get off the ride. If this is "liking" you then you're in a bit of trouble.

If the person is a teenager then I would say HORMONES. If not, then I would wonder if you are focusing TOO much on how this person reacts to you. Sometimes people are having an off day...some control it better than others. Why not just ask him what's up with the attitude. If you appear genuinely concerned with what is going on in his life he will probably open up. Also, he may not even be aware that he is doing this or that you are SO sensitive to his mood fluctuations.

Because a lot of us are moody. We don't have to be bipolar or manic depressive to simply be moody with all the challenges that life brings us. The important thing is not to change YOURself because of HIS mood. Because most people bring us down with their bad moods. There is no need for you to put energy into figuring him out. Just focus on being your best self. If we all focused our energy on bettering ourselves that would radiate out to the rest of the world. Too idealistic, I realize.

It could be that he likes you. A lot of guys, they like to be mean or pick on girls that they like. Or it could be that he starts to learn that you are very nice person. He might got hurt from being friend or being in a relationship with opposite sex before, so he put his guard up. SO nobody can hurts him again.

Either he's having a crazy time in his personal life and it overflows into the time you have to deal with him, or he's a druggy or a mental case who can't tell the difference.

You would literally have to sleuth it out.
