The first and most influential cricket club in the land was formed at Hambledon, Hampshire, in the 1760's. The club was sponsored by wealthy patrons, but the players were local tradesmen and farmers. The Hambledon club established techniques of batting and bowling which still hold today, and Hambledon claims a page in history books as the "Birthplace of Cricket".

Hambledon and the bat and ball ball pub is the spiritual birthplace of cricket. However, forms of cricket have been played in England since at least the 13th century.

There are no 'rules' in cricket - only LAWS.

The earliest known Code was drawn up by certain "Noblemen and Gentlemen" who used the Artillery Ground in London in 1744.

1755 saw the revision of the Laws into a format recognisable today in a meeting held at the Star and Garter pub along Pall Mall in London.

Finally, the MCC (todays Law custodians) devised their first code of Laws in 1788.
