Black smoke means too much fuel, not enuff air/ spark, u've got to figure out which one or combo, but really every 190 thats had that problem with me was sensor related( not nessesarily) a boost sensor would be common, american name would be MAP sensor( manifold air pressure((vacumn)), so I'd look for vacumn leaks, tune up condition, and another common 1 would be coil, look at the basics and any other work you may have done recently

As some people have said black smoke is the result of too much fuel and not enough air, im not familiar with your system on your car but i would first check the air filter, this could be blocked or there could be an obstruction causing a reduced airflow to the intake system, it may have a air flap system and sometimes the flap needs resetting try the air filter first its the cheapest opition, sadly i have no data on your model to hand so i cant advise more, i would say a mobile tuning guy would be ok with this car as its not too complicated, ignore any ideas of engine or oil wear at this time thats a bit premature and besides if it was burning oil it would be blue smoke not black

Definitely the rings in trouble in your car. Get a price on getting them done in a few garages and then check out a second hand engine to see which is the cheaper option.
It always helps to keep an older car well serviced but Mercs are reknowned for this, Always make sure it gets the right type of oil.
And to trevorB, I am also a professional mechanic and I will almost guarantee this is the problem as I have worked on Mercs for many many years. People are looking for different opinions on this site and that is what they are getting.

Assuming this isn't the first time you have started this car in like 15yrs and you have exhausted your efforts to "tune it up". I would say that the engine has overheated at some point. it sounds as though you have no compression and thats why you have no power. the head is probably warped. take it to a junkyard

Probably piston ring gone at least.
Lift out the dipstick and see if there are bits of metal residue in the oil.
You need to get it to a garage for checking before you drive it any further

Sounds like your engine is in dire need of repairs before the engine siezes up completely or you do any more damage to it. Get it to a garage asap. Is there any oil left in the engine?
