If I were doing this, I"d catalog the books first by author, giving each book a number. Place the books in numerical order on shelves.
Now, create a database (or excel spreadsheet) with the author, Title and general subject. I'd use a general subject as to the type of book Fiction or NonFiction and then by the subject Fiction could also have Humor or Drama, Myster, Horror. NonFiction could also have Cookbook, Biography, etc.
With this in place, you no longer need to worry about your collection. When you're seeking an author, you search by the name in your little database and find the number - which tells you the location of the book on the shelves. Same can be done with Titles, and subjects.

In relation to the books, it depends on what they are. If they are just a lot of recent paperback novels etc. you may just want to dispose of them as boxes. If, however, they are more serious books - for instance if the person who left them had a speicialist interest (e.g. was an academic) or was a collector of older books, then you may want to go through them one by one. A book dealer will probably be willing to look at boxes, but of course you then risk the dealer profiting from that one valuable book hidden at the bottom of a box.
abebooks.com (or abebooks.co.uk if you want the prices in punds) is the standard site for selling second-hand books online: if you have time you can check up there to get an idea what your books are worth. But a dealer will not offer to buy at anything like the selling price!

Depends, you can sort in alphabetical order by the second (surname); or you can sort the books by type, eg Fiction, Autobiography, Humour etc as the main divisions, and by author within each group.
