Tampons are scary at first. Give her the pads and keep tampons in the house for her to try when she's ready. She'll get sick of the pads soon enough. Or the first time she wants to go swimming.

You're gonna get allot of answers for this one.
For your first couple times...I would use a pad.
Just until you know your flow and you're cycle.
After a few months I would try tampons.
Some girls do not like tampons others prefer them.
It all depends on how comfortable you are with your body.
Even tampons vary.
You have ones with applicators and OB which have no applicator.
Again it all depends how comfortable you are with your body.
I prefer OB tampons due to the fact that I find them to be the most absorbent. I have had several leaks with pads and other brands of tampons.
I swear by OB.
If you're comfortable with your own body and things don't gross you out too much I would go for the OB tampons after you know you're cycle.
Any type of tampon I find beats a pad.
Pads are bulky and noticeable
Tampons are discreet and you go swimming.

My very first period at 11 years old I used pads, but the very next one I used tampons and never went back. Pads are such a mess, blech. Ill never forget thinking at 11 , wow, I cant even feel them, this is great! You have more freedom with tampons and dont feel like you are wearing a huge diaper. As a kid you are self conscience about that, at least I was. Just make sure she is getting the right absorbancy...they make them for teens :) Gl!

They both have drawbacks. Pads are convenient when your getting ready to start and want protection (just in case). Can't do that with tampons. Tampons are good if your active and play sports. Try both and see which is right for you. Remember with tampons to read the insert that comes in the box. There is a chance of Toxic Shock Syndrome if not used properly.

pads first then let her decide if she want's to try tampons. I hated having to wear pads when I had my period because I just knew everyone knew I was having my period. How embarrassing! If she chooses tampons just make sure she knows how often to change them and not wear one for an extended time.

well it's a personal choice ever since i first started i was 12, now i'm 19 and i used tampons i never did like pads i tried them and to me they're not comfortable. but u should also let her choose give her the two and let her choose but u have to explain to her how to use the tampons properly. and if you give her the choice get the tampons with the plastic applicator it's a lot easier and don't hurt as much as the cardboard applicator.

I use both. I use tampons in the day or when I'm going out because pads are bulky and embarassing. I use pads at night to reduce the risk of TSS.

Whatever works for you. It varries.
Here's a heads up incase you get symptoms:
About 12 or 13.
Diet advice: Your body doesn't make omega 3's, it needs to be supplemented. Take fish oil or flax oil for kids with cinnamon. This will also help period.
Pain advice: menstrual pain is the result of loss of magnesium through the cycle. The body doesn't replace it. Magnesium Amino Acid Chelate approx. 100 mg (starting a day or two before period starts) every 3 hours will alleviate cramping.
Here's a horray! to you since you have your period, and do a happy dance for yourself,
Cheryl

it really depends on her maturity level. I was started on pads at 11 and started using tampons at 18.
