Inline 6's are known for there torque, flat six's have a nice low center of gravity, thus porches incredible performance. Flat (boxer) engines are also much more balanced because they are horizonalty opposed.

I think it's six of one, and a half dozen of the other. I prefer straight sixes because they are ridiculously easy to work on, are inherantly balanced for smooth running, and sound absolutely sweet. And besides, three of my favorite engines are straight sixes, the Hudson 308ci six, the 292ci GMC and the Tadek Marek 4.0l Aston six.

The flat six, though, has a lower center of gravity which makes it perfect for sports cars and the like, and tend to cool better because of their greater surface area. They can also be carbureted better than a straight six because they can have more even-length intake runners. They can get better fuel economy because the pistons don't have to fight gravity. And, since Porsche has very famously used the flat six, any flat six instantly has that panache conferred on it.

Flat 6's have a lower center of gravity.
V-6's tend to have better torque.
Flats and V's are shorter, and thus have stiffer crankshafts for their weight.
