This period is called stoppage time or injury time. The referee takes into account all the stoppages in the game. (Fouls,corners,throw-ins etc.). So if there was only say 2 fouls there would only be a minute. and if there were upwards of ten and various corners and such the number would be much higher.Once he does that he decides how much added time is appropriate. Once he does that approx. in the 89th minute he or she will signal to the fourth official how much added time is needed. The referee has been known to signal say 5 minutes of stoppage time and then blow the final whistle at say 4, he will only do this if the score is very lopsided and there is no point in continuing on.

The extra 3-5 minutes is from when the game was stopped for a penalty or injury. Lets say there is an injured player on the ground, there is a guy on the sidelines who has a huge clock and he times the amount of time that is stopped.

Its called stoppage time. the 3 to 5 min are to make up for lost time during the game such as injuries or fouls. during these injuries or fouls, the clock keeps running so they replace the lost time at the end of the game or before halftime

the game is sopposed to be two 45 min games. at the end, the ref counts up how much time was wasted when some one got hurt, or they just wernt playing. its called stoppoage time, so it would be fair, so they would be playing for a full 45 min. playing more then that isnt right

this is called make up time. futbol matches last 90 mins. two 45 min halfs. Time which was lost due to hurt players, fouls etc is added back on to make it a true 90 min match.

Time is approximate. Only the refs know the true time (the clock runs even when there are things like team changes and injuries) and they will play those 90 minutes.

For "injury time." Soccer games have a running clock, so officials keep a timer on how long injuries last and add that to the end.

This will be "whining time" for France soon. :-)

Go Italy!!!!!!!!!

it depends how the game was played. if there was alot of stoppages in between without the players playing it will be added at the end of each half. there are some games that are played so well such that they dont added extra minutes.

They add about 30 seconds from injuries that occur or time taken away during regular play.
