The answer to your question is really quite simple. The egg came before the hen.

The 'hen' is a domesticated animal that did not exist in its present form before man and civilization.

ALSO you ask what came first, the 'hen' or the 'egg'? Eggs have been around for litterally millions of years. You did not stipulate what kind of egg. Reptiles were laying eggs in pre-historic times.

If you are asking what evolved first, that would be the hen. Since the animal had evolved from previous inferior lifeforms, then it would have gradualy evovled from the ability to procreate from splitting itself (mitosis) into two beings to being able to reproduce and form eggs inside of it.
If you are asking which was created first (i.e. by God) then that would be the hen. It's the first chapter of Genesis.

It depends on the type of egg you are refering to. Mesolecithal eggs (from amphibians, lungfishes, lampreys, and lower Actinopterygians) evolved before macrolecithal eggs (from reptiles and birds). So the egg came before the hen. Therefore, the egg would have been in place millions of years before hens were present.

Look at the structure of an egg. Now look at the structure of a simple single-celled organism. Now actually think about your question. The purpose of life is to perpetuate itself. The chicken is just a living device that has evolved to perpetuate eggs! Mmmm. eggs.......

Let me answer your question with a question...

Who won the race first?

You obviously can't win the race if you don't start the race. And you can't be a hen if you didn't grow up from an egg.

The egg would have to have mutated from it's parents to become the hen.

See, God would've been stupid to make the egg first when it needs help incubating, so I would say the chicken. And all evolution is just evidence of each step God took in the Earth Recipe.
