I would say they are more uncomfortable than actually hurting.

No vaginal exams don't hurt, but they are uncomfortable. The best thing to do during a vaginal exam is to look up at the ceiling. Then focus on a spot on the ceiling or think about anything that will keep your mind busy.

I find they're more uncomfortable than painful. If it hurts, tell your doctor. He/she may be just a little too rough. Also ask them to warm the instruments first. Cold ones are really uncomfortable. But if you have any joint problems, you may find your joints in your knees hurt from being in the examination position.

Sometimes. Its unlikely to be overly painful, but it might be very uncomfortable. If you relax, I know its not natural but just make the willing choice to be calm, it will be better. Remember, sometimes doctors have to do vaginal exams on children or those who already have significant trauma down there, so they do know how to be careful and they do have small instruments if you are unusally smaller.

It usually hurts a little when I get my yearly pap done. The best thing to do is relax all your muscles in that area if you tense up it hurts worse. Easier said than done though because I always tense up .l

It depends on the doctor. I have had it where it was just uncomfortable, and then when a different doctor did it it hurt like hell. So I learned to just stick with the doctor who knows what they are doing.

i found like most of the people that have answered you that if you relax it makes it more bearable and it helps if you think about something else while it is being done plan the menu for your evening meal that should take your mind off things a bit good luck

they are uncomfortable, but DO NOT HURT. i always try to think of something relaxing, or even mundane, i have had loads of smears in the past few years due to having abnormal cells found and although they are not nice, i wouldn't be here now if i hadn't had them done. and remember that the nurse who is doing your exam, has probably had at least one done herself. but heres a funny story, when i last had my depo jab(contraception) it was my sons cub leader doing it. i actually had to bare my **** to her!
try not to worry, xx

No, you just have to relax!! Know it`s difficult to but the humour of the nurse saying `now just relax` as she wacks on a glove always makes me smile !!
