If in the spec it says 30W per channel into 4 ohms or words like this, or look at the back and see if you can plug speakers into it.

Check the outputs.

If it has a speaker output (jack) that you can plug headphones into, then it has a sort of half-assed amp in there. This will be a titchy CD player and will clip to your belt.

If it has line outputs (it will if it's of any size) then it will have a pre-amp but it won't drive proper speakers. You need an amp.

If it has proper speaker outputs (screw terminals for example, described as having an impedance of a small number of ohms) then it's one unusual box, and yes, it has an amp inside.
