My mother is giving me her engagement/wedding ring, and I am thrilled. The diamond is cracked and needs to be replaced, but the thing I am worried about is enlarging it. She has smaller fingers than me, so I need it enlarged (not on a large scale, but I can just get the ring over the lower knuckle on my ring finger!). Can jewelry stores do that? Do they add more metal to the ring? It's already a semi-thin band, so... ??

Yes, in most cases the ring can easily be resized up or down as needed. (There are some metals and some styles that cannot be resized, but the jeweler can tell you.) Depending on how thin the band is and how much it has to go up, the jeweler will either just stretch the metal which usually costs about $20 depending on where you go, or they can "re-shank" it. That basically means they cut out the back and replace it with a thicker piece in the length needed for the final ring size. This is more expensive as it's adding more gold.

Also, while most retail jewelry stores will do this if you ask them, they generally ship the piece out to have it done which costs more and takes longer. I'd recommend finding a local store (vs a chain) that does the work on site. Ask around to find a good place. You'll know they did good if you can't tell it's been resized (ie, even width, no seems) and the stones are secure.

Resizing a ring is not a big issue with jewlers tranined in doing so. They will add some metal and polish it, so you CANNOT TELL anything was ever done to it.

There is a limit as to how far they can go, however. Going too large or too small will distort the whole ring, and the jewerler will let you know if they can't do it before the work starts.

Is the diamond cracked or chipped? If chipped, a jewler can fix that, too. It's best if you take it to a jeweler can (hopefully multiple) and get professional evaluations.

It will cost you around 50 dollars to resize.

A jewelry store can enlarge the ring for you. If the band is really thin, they can add more metal to it to make it stronger also. This will help the ring last longer.

Yes, the jewellers can enlarge the ring. They will add more gold to the band according to your size. You will have to pay for the extra gold used and for workmanship. It is cheaper to go to a shop that does this than going to a big name jewellery shop. There are many in Far East Plaza or Lucky Plaza, usually located at the back of main shops. No need to worry, they do a good job.

First of all Congratulations on your wonderful gift I know it's very special to you. That said yes a Jewelry store can do that work and yes they do add metals to your ring but it must be done right so as not to have a dissimilar metal to metal problem. Therefore choose a known good Jeweler that carrys a good reputation. It might cost a little more but given the sentimental value it's worth it to get it right.

Yes they can enlarge the band. I have large knuckles and it hurts like hell to pull rings over them. But I prefer the smaller size because the ring just flops around on my finger.

Got my ring resized at La Ronde Jewellery centre in Lucky Plaza, increased from size 8 to 10.5. Very happy with the end product. Diamond ring is as good as new. He helped to polish it up and engrave it nicely. Diamond is nice and shiny again too. I stayed throughout as mine is a 1.5 carat diamond and I wanted to make sure.
The craftsman has over 30 years of experience in jewellery and is very good at what he does. Can also articulate very well what he's doing.

You should be grateful for the ring. The diamond cracked so get it repaired. Leave it the way it is. Don't enlarge it

Enlarging is easy and not too pricey either - wherever you get the diamond fixed shouldbe able to up-size for you.

Just take it in with you, any jewwler can do it and I think they don't add metal to it...but sort of stretch it. But I swear to you that if you take it in they will do exactly what you want to have done. Best wishes
