The more spin you put on a ball, the more the ball slows down. This is especially important to do on second serves because a slower ball has a greater chance of going in.
In reality, the second serve is struck just as hard as the first serve. However, more of the effort is channeled into spin instead of forward motion. The added advantage of spinning the second serve more, besides the fact that it has a better chance of going in, is that it bounces in a much trickier way, making it difficult for the Return to return.

Well, if you miss your 2nd serve, then you lose a point which isn't the best thing in the world since you are just handing over the point to your opponent. Double fault is very very bad thing so you don't wanna get a double fault so you tend to slow down your serve and make sure it goes in LOL And even though 2nd serves look slower, most pros put lots of spins on the balls so it would be harder to hit.

It is to save them from a double fault. It is not always softer, it usually has more spin on it. The first serve is flat trying to get an ace, the second serve has allot of spin just to try to throw off you opponent and to get the Ball in the court to play the point.

the second serve is slower because they want to make sure they get it in so they don't double fault and lose a point!
