Soccer comes from the word Association. Back in the days of England when Rugby got started, it was called Footbal too. It became hard to ask one another if they wanted to play football because one was thinking of soccer and one was thinking of Rugby. Before the word soccer, the sport was know as Association Football because it followed the Association rules to play rather than the Rugby rules. However, that was for only a short period of time before Rugby became the word to describe Rugby and soccer went back to being called football. When the game migrated to the States. The word football was used to describe the game they now call soccer.
However, American football became about because during a game a soccer player got fed up with his team losing so bad that he just picked up the ball and threw it in the net. More stints like this began to happen. Soon this game began to catch more popularity. It was then decided to rename Association Football soccer to identify the true football sport. However, it seemed that Americans had too much fun playing their own type of game to rename it anything else, and thus the soccer name stuck.

ive always wondered the same thing. its almost like they couldnt come up with a name themselves, so they stole it off some other sport and re-named it to what they wanted to call it. but footballs supposed to be like a combination of rugby and football(soccer), i think. but i have no clue how they came up with the word, soccer. football makes more sense seeing that you kick a ball around with ur foot. :-)
