Definitely at least 8. But more is good too, just don't sleep too long because more than 10 can distort your sleep pattern.

Depends upon your age and general health. Babies need up to 16 hours of sleep a day. Toddlers up to 12. Elementary school children need 10-12. Grade school children need 8-10, as do high schoolers. After age 20ish it goes down to 6-8, with men generally needing less than women except that women with young children have been found to function better on the low side than others. Once you get into old age, usually over 70ish it goes back up, 8-10. When you get sick or very old it goes back up to 10-12.

WebMD's article on sleep, which was reviewed by the Sleep Medicine Center at the Cleveland Clinic, and cites the National Institutes of Health and the National Sleep Foundation as their sources, state that:
"The amount of sleep a person needs depends on the individual. The need for sleep depends on various factors, one of which is age. Infants usually require about 16-18 hours of sleep per day, while teenagers need about 9 hours per day on average. Most adults need about 7-8 hours of sleep per day.
The amount of sleep a person needs also increases if he or she has been deprived of sleep. People do not seem to adapt to getting less sleep than they need. "

Every person is different. Some people need 6 some 12, and there are some who only need 3 or 4.
The important thing is keeping it consistent for yourself. Try to always get the same amount (although when you are sick do what your body says).
Pay attention what works best for you. Children need more. Older people may need less. Part of is based on the amount of Melatonin in your system.
