First if you don't want your battery to go dead today disconnect the battery terminal after your done examining the problem. check the brake pedal to make sure that its not the stop lights. there is a switch on the pedal that can stick sometimes especially on fords but they usually break altogether and dont leave the lights on. if thats not the problem you may have a short in the car and your mechanic may need to send it to a specialist.

the only way, theoritically, that your taillights would stay on while, ignition switch is off would be brake lights, they are the only lights still powered while ignition is off( besides newer cars with delayed illumination, but that would be headlights also),your brake light switch is probably failing and to confirm, they'd also be on, all the time( no change in lights while braking) and would be commonly a failed or missadjusted brakelight switch on your brake pedal

for a temporary fix, when you turn off the car for long periods, disconnect the positive cable from the battery. For a long term fix, get a new brake light switch...it's under your dash, up & behind the brake pedal.
