more screwed down. It is an oppressive, bleak religion based on fear and hypocricy. I much prefer atheism, it is much simpler and offers more scope to enjoy life.
(i've never practiced catholicism, but I do know everything!)
ps: womam12 's answer was unbelieveable!! i'm still laughing at it now. what a to$$er!

Being "screwed up" by any religious upbringing is usually actually being "screwed up" by the values and principles taught therein and reinforced by the parents who decided which faith (if any) and therefore values, and principles a child should accept. Catholics believe in repentance for sins after complete confession, and you have to mean it, or He knows. So, if you aren't a "perfect" catholic you no doubt feel some guilt about the sins you haven't confessed and the apologies you didn't really mean. That guilt carries over into other aspects of life, especially with ones family. Fortunately, my mother let me stay home from mass once I turned 12 and could be trusted alone. So, I was only subjected to communion and confession for a few years, and being the middle child, the guilt inflicting (for sins like not trying hard enough, not doing my best in school, nail-biting... you know, only major stuff) was divided among myself and my siblings. I do see a shrink, but for a myriad of reasons so I couldn't say if it was the religion at home, or if that would just be a good scapegoat. If that's what you mean by "screwed up". If however you're making a bad Catholic priest pun, then no.

LOL Steve! I'm a catholic so here's my answer ....
Brought up in a strict, staunch catholic home with boarding school (Yup Convent) for most of my childhood, praying galore ... I turned 13 and told my family God had died!!! I hd become an atheist because i really thought i had!
You can imagine the family's reaction to that one ... I wasn't Miss Popular for a good while but! i went on with my life and didn't feel anymore screwed up than anyone else! It was many years later when i felt a need to go back to pray, this reminded me that i did believe! Always had! Then the process continued and i went back to Mass and now i enjoy it because it's my decision, no one is there to bug me or brainwash me as i felt i was. And no i never needed the help of a psychiatrist either! You see i'm a psychiatric nurse! And in my job ... it's helped me relate to people whose lives had been plagued with spiritual pressure!

Well honestly, I guess I could say my upbringing was screwed up right from the start. My parents were from two totally different cultural societies, and my parents each practiced different faiths.
this lead to a lot of confusion as I was growing up. eventually, i just let go of religion altogether, finding it pointless. I do have some problems that are probably worthy of psychiatric therapy but I have not sought it, but I cannot say all of these problems stemmed on religion alone

Don't let it bother you. I tell people I was brought up a catholic and that is why I'm now an aethiest. Looking back i feel very angry at the rubbish that was forced on me. Fear was used to keep you on the straight and narrow. I got over it in early adulthood. I am now 65.

What exactly do you mean by "screwed up"? From whose perspective? You have to give a framework for your question because you're asking about an ideological system and the way your question is phrased, you are questioning that belief system. Then again, where are you coming from when you ask those questions?

My friend who still lives at home is so screwed up. His dad drinks until he passes out. His mom is crazy and bitches non stop. He himself is a little out there. All 3 of them treat others like sh*t and they think they are better than most everyone because they have money. It's all ok though because they go to church on sunday.

Right here!! And, yes, I do require psychiatric help, but I just don't want it. The Catholic faith is too confusing because of its hypocracy like the gays. If god supposedly loves us all, why does he hate gays? Think about it.
