My theory is they are making it up as they go.

How can these people say they have never watched and then say they will never be appealed to it.
The characters have very advanced psychological profiles built up with the show,
I believe in the tesla theory, where by the island is one of three bases spread over the world that can be used to magnify and direct electromagnetic currents.
Tesla was a real man and developed some extremely innovative inventions, such as earth quake machine. His electromagnet experiment was intended to halt armies and to prevent war.
But the others may be trying to use it as a weapon.
I also believe that Alvar Hanso is the leader that Henry Gale mentions, according to the fictional Hanso Foundation websiteconnected with the show, he is missing, and was obsessed with life extension, so he could be hiding out on the Island.
Also apparently JJ Abrams is interested in Tesla.

my thery is that desmund's boat has a tracking device on it and it did'nt
show up because of the electromagnetic in the hatch but since the hatch blew up, the tracking device will rescue them all.
