Different parts of the ocean are different depths. Coasts are shallow, while open water is usually very deep.

This question is very broad because the oceans vary in depth. Generally the closer to land the more shallow and the farther away from land the deeper. There are exceptions though, such as sand bars and sink holes.

hah. the marianas trench is far, far deeper than 17,000 feet. try twice as much at 35,800ft. they always say you can fit mt. everest down there......
