Here are a few different styles for Paper Mache
Pick the one you'd like to try
1) 3/4 white glue to 1/4 water if your using a good thick glue
or do 1/2 and 1/2.
2) Cook method: 1 part flour to 5 parts water..boil about
3 minutes and let cool this is the easiest and cheapest way.
and it turns out really smooth.
3) 1 part flour to 1 part water and stir together.
I like to tear newspapers and mix with some old computer type
paper and even paper towel. This helps with the painting and
it makes it more smoother. Poster paint works wonders on
paper mache.
Have fun, making your paper mache. enjoy your project...

Glue is one sort of method for paper mache (papier mache). I like to use wall paper paste because you can mix it into different consistencies depending on the type of paper you use. Also, it doesn't attract bugs like just water and flour does.
If you want the result to be shiny, you can use ModgePodge, which is a type of glue, to both paper mache and have it dry clear and shiny. Or you can try a spray called Krystal Klear to get a shiny surface.
You can use wall paper, gift wrap, magazine pictures- just about anything.
Be careful- too much liquid can make the image run, or the paper rip, especially if you are trying to cover a shape.
Most people use balloons to paper mache over- because you can pop them and remove them easily. If not ,you need to be able to cut the item open and then re-paper the seam to get your shape back.
Be patient and let your layers of paper dry before you go onto the next layer. Also work out bubbles and lumps gently so you can get a smooth surface (that is if that's what you're trying to achieve).
This can be a messy process- so use anything disposable to make clean up fast and hassle free.
Good luck.

When our daughter was little, my husband and I used to make some of her Halloween masks out of paper mache. We would tear strips of newspaper and coat them in a flour and water mixture. Then we would cover a balloon with the strips. When the strips were completely dry, we would stick a pin in it to break the balloon. Then we would paint it.
I think you can also buy something at a craft store to make paper mache, too. Have fun!
