Are you thinking of the column in the centre of the Place Vendome?

"It's stone core is entwined in a spiral made from the bronze from 1,200 cannon captured at the Battle of Austerlitz in 1805. The first statue to be placed at the top of the column was of Napoleon as Caesar; in 1814 he was replaced by HenriIV, who was removed for the 100 Days. Louis XVIII hoisted a colossal fleur-de-lis; Louis-Philippe re-established Napoleon, this time in military uniform. The Commune tore down the column in 1871; the Third Republic re-erected it and placed upon it a replica of the original statue."

In 1814 it was called the Austerlitz Column. Now the Colonne de Vendome or Victory Column:

There is also the July Column in the Place de la Bastille:

And an obelisk in Place de la Concorde:

If it's covered in Hieroglyphics, it's the obelisk in the center of the square in Paris where the royal court of Louis XIV was guillotined.

Isn't it from Egypt? It matches London's Cleopatra's needle, I think anyway.
