I know theres a website out there where people can list things they want to trade or give away and it's sorted by area. Does anyone know the name of it?

try craigslist.com
or look in yahoo! groups for "Freecycle" and then your city.

Another place you can try is http://www.freecycle.org, but that site is more restrictive than Craigslist, and the moderators can be very picky sometimes.
