Its hard to say, there were so many mistakes.

1) He GAVE AWAY the Panama Canal.

2) Interest rates went through the roof. The prime rate was over 10%.

3) He pardoned ALL draft dodgers.

4) Unemployment was high.

5) He tried to control the price of fuel, as a result, there was no fuel. People waited in line for gas for hours.

6) He let a group of thugs in Iran hold our hostages for 444 days. When it first happened, he said "my main concern is for the safety of the hostages". That told our enemy to keep them. They did, until Ronald Reagan took office.

7) He didn't help the Shah of Iran. The Shah of Iran was pro western, he let women go to school, he wore a suit. Fundamentalist Muslims took over, who we have to deal with now.

8) When Russia invaded Afganistan, he got tough. He said "well, we won't go to your olympics in 1980". That really showed them! Of course Russia didn't come to our olympics in 1984.

The one thing he did to make things better was to lose to Ronald Reagan. Reagan received over 90% of the electorial vote.

But, Jimmy isn't done. He cozies up with terrorists, such as Castro, Arafat, and Hamas.

Too bad we can't get a non-partisan answer for this question. Returning the Panama Canal and pardoning Viet Nam War resister were both goo things.
Putting price controls on fuel was a good thing and had already been done by Nixon and it is unclear whether the price controls were bad for the supply or whether the oil industry deliberately sabotaged Carter by manipulating the supply.
The history of Afghanistan today and the US's complete inability to do anything positive for Afghanistan (with the highest production of opium ever recorded under the US protection of 2014) shows that Carter made the right decision not to fight Russia over Afghanistan.
The Shah was a brutal dictator and Carter's mistake there was to support the Shah as long as he did and to reinforce the Shah's power that had come from the CIA destroying the Iranian democracy in 1954., Carter's mistake was in not speaking strongly enough against the Shah's dictatorship to allow the moderate Muslims of Iran to have a place in the regime change.
He supported solar power and alternative energy and even put solar collectors on top of the White House that Reagan immediately removed when he came in office.
Carter's main mistake was trying to be liked by everyone, both liberals and conservatives, and thus he was liked by no one.

Jimmy Carter's biggest mistake was running for president. His biggest contribution to making things better was to lose the election in 1980.

To add to Ihavemyfaultsbutiamnotwrong's list,

#9 - In 1980 Carter allowed Cuban Immigrants into this country with "open arms." Which doesn't sound so bad except Castro decided to clean out Cuba's prisons and mental institutions and send them all here on a boat! As a result the crime rate went up in places like Florida drastically. Murder, rape, and other serious crimes were committed in the US by these violent and insane criminals that Castro was happy and willing to get rid of! I don't sympathize with Castro at all and still can't say I blame him for doing that! Carter was an idiot!

Carter's biggest mistake was in thinking that he was a good president.. Course, the guy that he was running against was not to sharp either.
He really screwed the American people in Central America..
As far as what did he do to make things better for American while in office,, Well, Can't think of a thing that he did... By not getting reelected tells you something.. In other words, He was no good.

His first biggest mistake was running for president.

The thing he did that made things better was getting defeated for a second term.

Carter was a very smart man with good intentions but he tried to micromanage everything. He also refused to wheel and deal with congress. He just wasn't an accomplished politician.

Jimmys always seemed like a good guy to me, but he wasnt a good prez. You should back off of him a bit tho because as a republican, i will admit hes done some good things SINCE he's been president . And when you compare him to Kerry, Hillary, Bill or Al, the guy all a sudden seems pretty damn smart, lol

Well for starters he pardoned the draft dodgers. That didn't sit too well. He was totally incompetent in dealing with the hostage crisis in Iran. Lets' see ......we had no gas at the pumps (that was fun), we saw interest rates rise to double digits. .......hmmmm......its hard to pick which his biggest mistake was. What he did to make things better was to lose his job in the white house and head on back to Georgia. He was much better qualified on the small local level.
