I have one cow, (family milk cow), and I realized that she had mastitus about a week ago, and have since been treating her for it, but I am wondering what causes it in the first place? I keep her clean... and she isn't running around in any brush or brambles, she's not with any other cattle or horses... why does she have this right now?
It's not uncommon for cattle to get this, when their dirty, or running around... but...

Perphaps it is due to weather or a metabolic disorder.
"Mastitis is the inflammation of the mammary gland caused by microorganisms, usually bacteria, that invade the udder, multiply and produce toxins that are harmful to the mammary gland.

90-95% of mastitis problems are caused by microorganisms invading the mammary gland via the teat end, and 5-10% of mastitis problems are due to injuries.

Contributing factors to mastitis are people, milking equipment, weather, housing conditions (bedding and ventilation), other diseases and metabolic disorders, milking procedures, and contaminated drugs, teat dips, water and treatment equipment. '

Sum cattle can just get it if thy have had it before thy can get it there after with out any reason I know that sounds crazy but your Holstein gets it every year even though she is milked daily she still gets it. Just be care full around her because you can get it also I have had it twice know and it hearts very bad so make sure that you were gloves if you have any cuts or scratches on your hands and make sure that you were shoes around her because it can get in the ground. I'm mot sure if it stays in the ground but I know I got it from not wearing shoes in the pin with her I did not understand how I got it again the Dr. told me it was because the virus was still there in the ground and he told me to put out Lyme so that it would kill it in my pin were I did keep her know I have not had any trouble. the first time I got it was because I was doctoring her and I poked the needle in my finger by accident so that is how i got it. So just take your time and be very careful. Other animals can get it to so try to keep them away for awhile my pit bull had 4 of her **** cut off because she got it twice know if she gets bread and when she starts to give milk she gets it so when this happiness we have to put her on antibiotics before she gets it really bad so just please be carefully.
