i am starting school again to become a personal trainer but would also like to be a medical asst or a certified nursing asst. Is anyone of the two better than the other? Which would allow more hands on experience? Which one is there more of a need?

Actually, the best advice I can give you is to bypass all this, and get your RN (registered nurse). There is much more a demand for this, the pay is higher, plus you can specialize, and make even more money. You'll be glad you did in the long run. Think about this very hard...the decisions you make today will affect you for the rest of your life.....best of luck to you......

I am both, so I can tell you, being a CNA, is hard work. there are good and bad parts to both. working as a CNA, your a vital part of the nursing profession, but you get the short end of the stick, some times. i.e. patient to aide ratio. but your patients can make the difference. Especially when you see that your patients like the fact that you are helping them, and they truly appreciate it. As a CNA, you can work in a nursing home, or a hospital.
A MA (medical assistant)
Works as the doctors right hand. they do basically everything in the office. shots, drawing blood, some even do x-rays too. it too can be a heavy work too, depending on how busy the office is. some only see 50 to 100 patients a day, some as many as 1000. depending on how many doctors you have in the office.
As for what there is a need for more right now, I would say a CNA, because there are so many postings for jobs if you look in your local paper, or on the net too.
As for the more hands on, they are about the same, but I would say the aide is more hands on.

I am a CNA and I would never do it again. If I knew 15 years ago what I know now I wouldn't become a CNA. You are cleaning up pee, poop, vomit, boogers, you name you clean it. And your back aches all the time, and some older people are not the sweetest to take care of. So if I was you I would go for the Medical Assistant. It is almost as if once you become a CNA you can't get out of it, and I want out.

The question is...hands on what?

If a CNA your hands will be on lots of bedpans and wheelchairs, and likely giving spongebaths.

I am not sure that either will really be of much professional help to you in reaching your goal. They may be able to provide some paid work hours in a medical setting, perhaps with hours that are more suitable to your classes, but the class/work fit should be checked carefully. If you do not require the paid work, skipping this step and focusing on your studies might be the better path.

Hands on would be a nursing assistant. They are the ones that work in hospitals .
Certified nursing assistants mostly work in Dr's offices.

I would go with CNA. You will get a lot more exposure to patient care in a hospital setting and working side by side with RNs will teach you a lot. Most hospitals have tuition assistance as part of their benefits package. Good luck to you.

Medical Assistant....you would learn more. A Nurse Aide is aka a glorified butt wiper. I'm a nurse and I love my CNA's to death but they work their butts off and aren't appreciated enough. There is no way I could do it. Also I couldn't do my job with out them. They are my eyes and ears when it comes to the pts. A CMA would learn more medical. A CNA is basically care for the pt. re comfort and such.

If you want to be hands on with the doctor then I solely recommend becoming an MA although I would really suggest going on as an RN.
