Many Europeans dislike American politics (warmongering, extreme capitalism,..) and American arrogance. Every time I hear "the greatest nation on earth" and such, I think of lots of other countries, the U.S. would never make my Top 10. How a country with such a high crime rate, so much poverty and so much social injustice can consider itself the greatest is just beyond me. And then, instead of spending most of the money to fix said problems, the U.S. spends Billions upon Billions on their military. Sad.
I know and met many friendly individuals from the U.S., however, as a society, you're not very high on the totempole. You could do so much good and instead waste it on military spending.

However, hate ? That's too extreme. What would the world look like without the U.S. ? Probably not better. As for the comment (first) regarding WWI and WWII, that's just BS - most people LOVED the Americans after the wars, they lost most of the respect and love in the following years. Even Germans liked the U.S. in the 50s and 60s, with the Marshall plan you saved Germany. Standing up to the Soviets (Berlin blockade) you kept it free. But this spirit is gone. Today the ultimate motives seem to be MONEY, MONEY and , oh, MONEY and POWER. If you invaded Afghanistan and Irak for justice and freedom, how about the many other countries (without oil or strategic importence) you just overlook. The military machine has to be fed and the U.S. NEEDS oil. I will not even start regarding the blind support of Israel.

The term hate is far too strong.

But at the time America isn't really that popular in Europe. It's a lot about politics. The US government is extremely unpopular. Has to do a lot with the way the situation around Iraq has developed. I only mention Abu Ghraib and Guantanamo. This big unpoularity is quite a feat as right after 9/11 there was a big wave of sympathy for America all over Europe. A German politician said: "These days we're all Americans" and that was truely felt by almost all people. But somehow the Bush administration managed to blow that sympathy.

Also there is this feeling that the Americans sometimes are a little ignorant about what's happening in the world outside the US, don't speak any other languages than English for example.

On the other hand you should see that Coca Cola, Kobe Bryant, Britney Spears and "Friends" all made it to Europe, so there is a lot of America in Europe. If there would be true "hate" as you suggested in your question, then that wouldn't happen.

And on a personal level I think any American travelling to Europe maybe hear some critical questions about US politics but receive a warm welcome.

I'm European and I don't hate America -- in fact, I'm even living here.

There's stupid people on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean. That's why some Europeans hate America and some Americans hate Europe, especially Germany and Italy.

With the a threat exception of France, we Europeans do no longer hate united statesa.. And to be truthful to the French, they do no longer extremely hate united statesa. the two - they only hate (rightly or wrongly) the dominance of the English language. That mentioned, there are some factors of yankee lifestyle/custom/regulation/politics and so on that maximum Europeans do unlike (hate is a few distance, some distance too reliable a be conscious). Take, as an occasion, the project raised interior the question, specifically, weapons. The familiar eu thought of the u . s . is that weapons could be bought/bought as extremely as candy - and we stumble on that quite scary. This view is a possibility subsidized up via the info, such via fact the respective homicide rates the two edge of the Atlantic, with the yank fee being some distance larger than Europe's. nonetheless, this would not propose Europeans hate individuals - which would be stupid. the two, i'm particular there must be factors of eu existence with which individuals are uncomfortable yet that would not propose that individuals hate Europeans. as a replace of attempting to discover enormously lots non-existent mutual hatred, we ought to continually rejoice the failings we do have in elementary (e.g. democracy, rule of regulation, language and so on). We agree on lots greater beneficial than we disagree.

I don't think they hate Americans.

Question brought to mind a film clip I saw somewhere.
It was made by the Communist Party in France. Shortly after WW2.
Bunch of French Villagers in Inn...sipping wine.....
Barging in front door of inn....American COCA COLA SALESMAN.
Jacket and tie and case of Coca Cola samples.
He does short sales pitch on one of the villagers..
the villager sceptically takes a sip...
Then spits it out onto the floor....
"this swill is not fit for Frenchmen. Take your Coca Cola and go back to America!"

I think a lot of Europeans watching their cultures fade away.
They got their own immigration problems...... for instance.
They have got terrorist cells.....homegrown....recruited from the children of "guest workers".

Employment picture doesn't look so good.

But I think it is mostly DUBYA.
I made a comment in another forum that "cowboy" is a hot button in EUROPE.
(somebody responded and said it wasn't true...but that isn't what I heard)

War in Iraq justified by cowboy gibberish doesn't help.

My teacher says its because europeans find that we dont present ourselves as well as we should in public and also we aren't a trusted country. America is an awsome country though and they should think of us equally to them.
