Go to the county government office and look up your address. All property claims should be recorded there. Besides liens, you will also find interesting little tidbits like how, if oil is ever discovered on your property, it belongs to the homebuilder, not you, etc.
If there is a lien that you would like to get rid of, next step is to hire a property attorney.

Liens are generally filed at the courthouse of the county where the property is located. Check the public records.

a lien normally is a result of a balance due. properties in default of taxes are public record and can be acquired ( possible for a printing fee) at the local county government building in person. the local government or collector files their claims with a local law firm who handles the recovery-contacting them may help too.

request a preliminary title report, this must be order by a loan officer oppening escrow, don't worry the same person can close escrow with out causing any problems.
