Here is a good link. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Personal_Digital_Assistant
I am on my 4th one now. I use a Windows Based Ipaq hx2755, I have had great service from it and it is so much easier than hauling my laptop around. I sync it with my computers at home and at work, so I have my schedule available wherever I go. I recommend a couple of extras if you get a PDA. Get a keyboard to go with it if you will be doing a lot of writing. Before you use it, get a good screen protector for it. Palm is the other major operating system and makes excellent products as well. Go to Yahoo Mobile and survey the downloads available for PDAs. See which downloads go with which products and go to your electronics store and check the price of the units and accessories. Happy handheld computing.

Before you get one you should ask yourself if you really need one. In the next few years nobody will want a PDA. The next gen cell phones will be able to do everything a PDA can do and more.

But basically, its an organizer/phonebook/computer/phone, all in one if you want to spend that much money. You can get some that has microsoft office on it, or a camera, or mp3 player. All depends. But go to howstuffworks, and they can explain it the best.
