Although I have opened only one window at present. I'm not using any other application on my XP pro with 256 MB RAM.

xp uses at least 128mb to start, more depending on the apps you have starting up, open task manager and see how many process you have running and how much they are using

Windows XP itself is going to consume quite a bit of memory.

Right-click on the blue task bar and choose Task Manager from the pop-up menu. Click the processes tab and then the memory usage heading. It will show you what processes are using what memory.

there could be many causes for this. windows has many services running in the background which take up a lot of ram. even with my computer with 512mb of ram, i never get over 100mb free. you may also have spyware which, in bulk, takes up a lot of ram.

Only one app. but you probably have close to 30 processies running. All consuming memory.
