I'm not sure why they think that. My former boss was Greek and he acted like he was an authority or something. He would keep mixing up the Greek and Latin names- some expert!
A lot of Greek parents send their kids to "Greek School", where they learn the language and history, etc. So maybe that's where they learn (poorly) about Greek mythology.

I've never noticed that, but they may have studied it more. Like the United States students study our Civil War- there's no reason a Greek or a German wouldn't know more about it, but it would be unusual.

I know lots of Greeks and not one has ever proclaimed to be, or even talked much about the subject.

Well, who else would know better?? It's their culture, their traditions, their history, their stories...it's all passed down from generation to generation.
