There's a layer of the atmosphere high in the sky that is composed of ozone. Ozone is a type of oxygen with an extra atom (O3 instead of normal O2). This layer of atmosphere helps living things by blocking some Ultra-Violet light coming from the sun. Too much UV light can cause cancer.

Humans were using too much chemicals like chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) which eventually got to that layer of the atmosphere and reacted with the ozone. This decreased the ozone and now there are holes in this ozone layer over the North and South poles. Those places are now getting more UV light than normal.
