My top 10 favorite films:

1. Vertigo (1958): Alfred Hitchcock's profound and deeply personal suspense masterpiece.
2. Seven Samurai (1954): Akira Kurosawa's extraordinary samurai epic, which features some of the greatest and most visceral battle sequences ever filmed.
3. 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968): Stanley Kubrick's deeply thought-provoking science-fiction symphony.
4. Citizen Kane (1941): Orson Welles' first feature-film is the most innovative and influential film ever made, and is widely regarded as the greatest film of all-time.
5. Rashomon (1950): Akira Kurosawa's examination of the nature of truth and the first Japanese film to gain major notoriety in the states.
6. Sunrise (1927): F.W. Murnau's beautifully crafted, deeply expressive and stunningly poetic silent masterpiece.
7. Dr. Strangelove or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb (1964): Stanley Kubrick's hilarious and paranoid cold war satire.
8. The Godfather (1972) and The Godfather Part II (1974): Francis Ford Coppola's incredible multi-generational crime saga which explores the dark side of the capitalist American Dream.
9. Raging Bull (1980): Martin Scorsese's brutal character study, which explores the soul of a profoundly violent man and searches for the human core buried deep inside him.
10. Touch of Evil (1958): Orson Welles' tongue-in-cheek, film noir vision of corruption.

If you are looking for a great movie for the 4th of July, I would get The Patriot with Mel Gibson. It's a bit bloody for kids to watch but its one of the very few good movies about the Revolutionary War (the winning of which is the reason we celebrate this holiday)

if you want a sentimental piece, try Sliding Doors. It stars gwenyth paltrow, and its about this woman named helen. She comes home from work and gets on a train. but in the alternate universe, she misses the train. The whole movie is playing out her life according to one small detail, the sliding doors of a train. In the one where she makes the train, she comes home early and catches her boyfriend cheating on her, whereas the second one, where she misses the train, she gets mugged and has to go to the hospital, and misses them together. Its an amazing movie that will make you laugh cry and just plain feel good.

A good movie I really like is The Count of Monte Cristo. Other good ones are Requium for a dream, that ones a little harsh though. Some other good ones are anchorman, oceans 11, good will hunting
