As warm, moist air contact cold air conditioner parts, the water vapor in the air condenses on the cool surfaces. Normally, this water is collected in a drain line. Mold, mildew, algae and other nasties can grow in this line, eventually clogging it.

Some systems have a condensate pump at the end of the drain line. This pump either pumps the water outside, or to a water drain line (like the one used by your washing machine. Check to make sure that the pump is working if you have one. The pump should be on a switch that turns it on when there is a certain amount of water inside, this prevents the pump from running all the time and burning up when there is no water. To test this, pour some water into the hole where the drain line enters.

One more thing that could be wrong is that your system could have frozen up. This is usually caused by low freon levels, and your system will have to be recharged by a professional. You will have turn your system off and let everything thaw for several hours before any more freon can be added.

Your condensation drain line is plugged. To fix this you need to locate the drain line and blow it out with compressed air. I've found you can prevent this by using chlorine tablets in the pan twice a year. You can find the tablets at any pool supply company. The advantage of the tablets is they dissolve slowly and thus prevents the mold and algae from forming over time.
