I think it really is. I hate it when i see people asking for someone to be their friend. They don't even know who that person is so they might get themselves into trouble. The most people that do this are around 12 years old. And its even worse for them. Who agrees with me on this?

There is nothing fundamentally wrong with talking to people on the Internet. YOU are doing it right now and you do not perceive it as being bad.

The sad part is that there are a number of predators out here who pray on youth and naivete and that is scary.

It is VERY important that you NEVER divulge any pertinent personal information on the net if you are what would be called a minor. If you are an adult and want to that is a slightly different story. You may be searching for a relationship and that is much different that having a 12 year old tell some nameless faceless Internet identity where they live.

It is also very important that parents keep close tabs on who and where the children spend time on the Internet.

People can make long term and fruitful friendships on the Internet. I met a number of people on the net that I shared time with whilst traveling abroad 2 summers ago.

Common sense has to prevail and I KNOW kids lack that so the parents need to police them.

The bottom line is be careful.

I don't. Keep in mind the people who ask to be your friend without know someone are people who don't speak English as a first language, and they are trying their best to fit into Internet Chat that is normally done in English and not their native language.

Talking to people on the internet is not bad. Its going beyond the keyboard and meeting people they have no idea about is what is dangerous.

Talking to people isn't bad, its what people say that can be bad. In my opinion people don't talk enough, we could avoid many conflicts if we would talk about things. Young people need to learn how to express themselves and the internet is a great way to learn that. This is a revolution in terms of communication.

I have wondered myself if it is safe. I am 57, and have been toying with looking for a penpal.

I've searched the web some, and most penpal sites are confusing to me. I'm also a christian, and most christian penpal sites are for people looking for dates.

I would never use my name, like I don't here. I would never give out my address or phone #, but I'm still not sure if it would be unwise.

i dont think it's bad because it's only the idiots who tell them things like were they live and people rarely get into trouble because of this it's like thinking that going outside is bad because you can get hit by a car you only hear about the people who do get in trouble for this

I agree with you. You never know what the other guy is up to until it is too late. So according to me, talking to (unknown) people on the net is bad.
