Firstly, before you get the dog, do a little research on how to raise them and train them properly.

As far as running away, treat them well, train them properly, and keep them on a leash. The leash is more for their safety as it prevents them from dashing out into traffic. If you treat the dog well, it will stick to you quite closely.

I have had and trained several dogs. It does not matter what kind of dog you get they can all be taught obedience. Although I do prefer labs and border collies, just because that is what I use most. All you have to do is spend time with the dog and love it. While the dog is young you should have it on a long leash and let it run. Make sure the dog is preoccupied with something then call it. After calling the dog and it does not respond. Pick up the rope and pull it to you while you give the command come. After a week or so of this you should not have to pick the leash up anymore. Some people use the command here but with what I use my dogs for I have to teach the command heel. The two commands sound to much alike and can get confusing to the dog. It does not matter what word you say as long as the dog relates the word to returning to you. Good luck training your dog. It can be a very enjoyable time. I always look forward to getting to spend time with my dogs when I am working, training or hunting.

Well, I say get a dog.Just make sure you buy a tag and possibly a microchip.Always keep it on a leash when it's outdoors unless it's to the point where you think it's so comfortable that it will stand beside you when you take it somewhere or it will come to you when you call it.When you get it, pet it 24/7,love on it,tell it you love it or its so cute or something, talk to it,give it treats, play with it,and before you know it you two would be so close you want even remember why you worried about it running away in the first place.I just recently got a new dog, and were doing great! Well, I strongly agree you should get a new dog.Anyways GOOD LUCK!

whether a dog has a natural tendency to run away depends a lot on the breed. Do some research online (just google "dog breeds") and you can get a lot of good information on different breeds. Some are not roamers at all and prefer to be around their territory and their owner all the time.

Dogs are not cats. Most dogs will stay with their owner (i.e. pack leader). That is; as long as they well treated, get a lot of attention, and are well fed and exercised. Don't when a dog has it it will stick around.
Like I said dogs are not cats. (cats a whole other story). stop worrying and get a dog.
Dan.
