If a tree falls in the forest and nobody is there, can you really say a tree fell in the forest?

You know, it could fall with someone *there* and still seemingly make no sound. I had some storms come through here a couple of months ago and topple/uproot a 110' hickory.....and I didn't hear the bloody thing fall! It even took out a small section of the fence, but I was oblivious to it until I looked out the window and saw about 10' of tree on the ground where the fence used to be.....

Fortunately, it didn't come near the house nor anything else of value other than the fence, but the fence repair was surprisingly pretty easy and painless.

This is more philosophy than trivia. The definition of sound requires a receiver to hear the sound. Humans assume this means a person, hence the question. But what about the insects that live in the tree? Irish Eagle has a very good answer, but what if the answer is a fraction?

yes no matter if someone doesnt hear it, it will still make a sound due to the weight of the tree hitting the ground

Well it all depends on the anwser to that other question, how much wood could a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood? whatever anwser u get, divide it by pi and if it's an even number, it makes a sound, if the anwser was an odd number, it is silent

Who says there's no one to hear it? Are there any birds, small creatures - any creature that can hear?

Just because man isn't around to hear does not mean there was no sound...

Think of it this way - if you blow a dog whistle it produced a noise, just not one that you could hear - but there still was noise

The tree might make a sound or not depending on its size regardless if someone is there or not.

If lighting strike a tree, and nobody is there to see that, will the tree burn just the same? I believe it will.

The sound waves are there, it's just that there are no ears around to process them and recognize them as sound. I'd say it does, just no one hears it.
