All of the previous answers in my opinion are more the political definition of liberal, being tolerant in a friendly sense, with the goal of social unity. While I disagree that the religious definition is a good thing, the truth is that to most religious organizations and denominations, liberal would be defined and associated with lack of modesty, veering outside a specific doctrine, and condoning evil. That is the religious definition of liberal. It is not positive.

It's when a Christian doesn't accept all of the Bible's precepts, but he/she critisizes them first in order to believe in them. Liberalists, also, don't accept the inerrancy of the Bible.
