In a general sense, it refers to those people or groups of people (sects, cults, etc.) who believe something, e.g. a proposition or set of propositions (which they might refer to as "tenets", or perhaps their "creed") absolutely, i.e. the proposition is undeniable, inarguable, unquestionable, undebatable, etc. "Absolutist" is most typically applied to those who believe the Bible is the inerrant, literal, "word-for-word" word of God.
