Sprinkle corn starch on the plants. This will suffocate the worm and no pesticide is used. I have been using this method for three years now with great success. You will have to powder the plants again after a rain but the worms should be gone.(Dead)

most likely they are not green caterpillars, but the hated "tomato worm". They are about the width of the stem and can be difficult to see, but, pick them off, get a coffee can with either some poisonous solution, brake cleaner, etc. you want to destroy them. they are among the most gross things i have seen in a garden.

You got yourself a tomato hornworm infestation. There are certain wasps that lay their eggs on the backs of the worm and the larva eat the worm. You have to pick them off and kill them, but if you see one with little white spots on its back (the wasp egg} leave it. When they demolished my tomatoes, I had better luck catching them at night with a flashlight, it was a lot easier to see them. I like the idea about putting them in water for the birds to find.

They are a specific tomato worm. My aunt told me the only way to get rid of the little buggers is to pick them off and put them in a container with some gasoline and throw them away.
Knocking on wood so far so good for mine this year!

Go there and get Diatomaceous Earth. Theirs is "food grade" and will not harm humans or pets. It will kill anything with an exoskeleton.
"Sevin," (not seven) dust will kill most any bug but is a chemical pesticide and you do not want to use too much, especially on or near you fruit.

Try moving them. If you can't move them, then try spraying with soapy water.
