Female songs: I Will Always Love You by Dolly Parton.
Whitney took it higher in the charts but both really get to the point of someone who can't let go and move on. I can't see the person who really believes in those lyrics ever able to have another relationship, therefore it counts as a good, sad song.
Male songs: The Dance by Garth Brooks for the same reason as above. This one is a bit better than Dolly's because at least you get a view of why the singer loves the woman. In Dolly's it sounds a bit of an unhealthy codependency that the person can't give up on. Garth gives the reasons for the love.
