I think it's about the destructive nature of an all-consuming relationship. It's a relationship where giving is not sharing, but is an exhaustive practice of futility. He's comparing it to being crucified. At the end he has, "Nothing left to win; And nothing left to lose." He's lost himself somewhere along the way amongst all the giving. It sounds like a living hell.

Personally I think that song could go either way. some times you will be in relationship were you love them and yet it drives you insane being with them and just as crazy without them. Yet any one who ever rode the white pony understands the love hate situation from needing the drug yet knowing it will kill you at thee same time
