Not all of the songs that they recorded were written by them. They count, too.

"Bobby" Marta My Dear was about his dog. Dear Prudence was about Patti Boyd's sister.

I like Hey Jude. It just has a good message and a good tune that is catchy. I also like Norweigian wood. It is able to combine the sitar, a classical Indian instrument into a rock song. And McCartney actually plays it right. That is very hard to do, I have been to rock concerts many times and I went to a classical Indian concert. It would take so much effort to combine the two and the beatles did that.

My favorite Beatles song depends on my mood. It's impossible to name just one...ahhhh, but you didn't say favorite...you said best.

hhhmmm.......

Well, according to cover versions, and number of people knowing the lyrics, I'd have to go with "Yesterday". Personally, I think the song "Yesterday" is very sad, so I will have to count "Hey Jude" as being the best, because it has everything...it's hopeful, easy to remember lyrics, great advise, and a variety of music.

I need to qualify this - Just because I think it's the best song they recorded it may not necessarily be my favorite.

That being said - A Day in the Life

The songwriting, atmosphere, production and performances on this song are incredible

Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds. Because it marks their transition from a (extremely) popular band to a mature group of great musicians (specially Mc Cartney and Lennon).

Long And Winding Road
But the 2 classics are Yesterday and Let It Be. These will get the most votes!

Yesterday (if that counts), because its just such a simple, moving song.

If it doesn't, Eleanor Rigby. The creativity shown with that song is unusual for any rock group.
